The Back Story
From my early years, a deep passion for fashion has always resided within me. I constantly strived to curate stylish ensembles that harmonized. I was very determined to ensure each color displayed on my shirt or shoes perfectly complemented every other element of my attire. The simplest blue logo on my white shoes would mean my entire outfit would have to revolve around that. Throughout high school, my focus shifted towards science-related career prospects, leaving little room for my fashion endeavors. However, upon my graduation in 2020, I found myself confined to my home, pondering my true aspirations. With ample free time at my disposal, it became apparent that being confined to a laboratory and viewing cells all day was not the path I was made for. This realization prompted me to contemplate the activities that truly brought me joy, and without hesitation, shopping took center stage. This realization set me on my current path. I embarked on an exploration of merchandising, a profession that seemingly revolved around shopping, but it failed to align with my goals for several reasons. Nevertheless, what lingered in my mind during this period was an unwavering love for expressing my creativity, leading me to the realm of fashion design. I am immensely grateful that Iowa State presented me with this opportunity and provided me with a means to satisfy my creative aspirations.

Study Abroad : PAA
June of 2023, at Paris American Academy
Why I choose to study in Paris?
I have cherished the dream of Paris, much like many others. Yet, Paris, as the fashion capital, presented an irresistible opportunity for me to immerse myself in the world of fashion and learn from renowned French couture designers. The prospect of mastering exclusive couture techniques while living the Parisian life abroad was an exhilarating journey I couldn't resist.
What skills I acquired during my time in Paris?
During my time at the academy, I had the privilege of acquiring a diverse range of couture techniques that encompassed meticulous methods and practices. One of our notable projects involved creating a bias-cut dress, where I gained expertise in identifying and marking a precise bias line. Additionally, I dedicated extensive hours to perfecting the art of edge finishing on each individual lining piece. A fundamental aspect of couture techniques that I honed was the delicate craft of hand sewing, ensuring that every stitch remained secure and invisible from the right side of the fabric.
What we worked on and did during the month?
I was fortunate to be part of the Couture Techniques course at my academy, where we received instruction from Nicole Douvrey, a seasoned professional with over 30 years of experience in the couture industry. Our main project centered around recreating a vintage baby doll dress by Balenciaga, meticulously crafted from silk chiffon. In addition to our coursework, we were privileged to attend informative lectures hosted by Trend Union and received insights from an editor at "Fucking Young!" magazine.
Furthermore, we had the unique opportunity to embark on educational tours with the school's president, delving into the rich history of fashion in Paris. As a culminating experience, our schedule for the final week of June was packed with plans to attend various Men's Paris Fashion Week shows. These engagements ranged from assisting backstage to simply witnessing the runway spectacles. We did manage to attend the KIDILL show before our trip was regrettably curtailed due to the unforeseen circumstances surrounding PAA on June 21st.
What I will take away from my time in Paris?
My time in Paris has left an indelible mark on me, and there are several key takeaways I will carry with me. First and foremost, I will always cherish the invaluable lessons and guidance from my professors and staff who not only nurtured my fashion knowledge but also broadened my horizons in this dynamic field. Furthermore, my unique experience in Paris has instilled in me a deep sense of gratitude for the life I lead and the ongoing opportunity to apply the intricate couture techniques I've acquired. This perspective serves as a constant reminder of the privilege and responsibility inherent in the world of fashion.
Equally important, I will forever carry with me the significance of self-critique and the art of delicacy and precision in crafting quality and aesthetically pleasing work. These principles, ingrained during my time in Paris, have become fundamental to my approach to fashion, ensuring that I consistently produce exceptional and beautiful creations.
